Girl & The goat
Description
Situated at 555-3 Mateo Street in Downtown LA’s Arts District, Girl & the Goat Los Angeles launched in summer 2021 as the West Coast sibling to Stephanie Izard’s landmark Chicago original. Izard, the first woman to win Bravo’s Top Chef in 2008 and a James Beard Award recipient, opened the flagship in Chicago’s West Loop in 2010 through a partnership with Boka Restaurant Group. That venue quickly gained acclaim for its playful, globally influenced small plates that balance bold tastes with approachable sharing. The LA expansion brings the same spirit, adjusted for California’s abundant produce and longer seasons, resulting in dishes that highlight local ingredients alongside enduring favorites. The restaurant has earned Michelin recognition and steady crowds, positioning it as a go-to for groups seeking lively meals before exploring nearby galleries or bars. For bachelor parties or celebrations, its communal setup makes it a strong choice among Los Angeles restaurants.
The triangular brick building features high warehouse ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with light. Rattan chairs surround bleached wood tables, while hanging plants and greenery create a relaxed, boho vibe distinct from the darker Chicago location. An L-shaped open kitchen allows views of the action, and seating options include indoor booths, a central bar, and a shaded courtyard patio for outdoor dining. The room accommodates up to 200, with noise levels rising as evenings progress—conversations flow easily early on, turning animated later. Staff guide groups through the family-style menu, suggesting portions and pairings, which suits extended dinners that transition into nightlife plans.
The menu divides into sections like bread, vegetables, fish, meat, and goat, encouraging three to five plates per person for variety. Bread offerings start with naan and dips, such as tahini tofu or carrot hummus. Vegetable standouts include the sautéed green beans with fish sauce vinaigrette and cashews, a staple that delivers umami depth. Goat liver mousse arrives spreadable with accompaniments like crumpets or crackers. Signature items carry over with LA twists: goat curry ($35) combines tender meat with radishes, pickled vegetables, and masa chips; confit goat belly ($35) pairs sweet-savory notes; and sticky glazed pork shank ($42-45) features a hoisin-inspired glaze that pulls from the bone. Other highlights encompass beef short rib noodles ($37), roasted oysters, chickpea fritters ($17), and blue cornbread ($14). Desserts like mango sticky rice ($15) provide tropical closure with ice cream and granita. Many dishes offer vegan or gluten-free adaptations.
A full meal with drinks typically ranges $100-150 per person, reflecting premium sourcing and creative execution. Cocktails emphasize fresh elements, with options like the Farmer’s Market Margarita, while the wine list focuses on small producers.
