Conclusive Evidence Techno Music is 'High Culture'

Mozart, Beethoven, and ... Skrillex?

If you've ever gotten into an argument about whether electronic music is "high culture" or not, prepare to have a definitive answer. A German court ruled this week that the high-profile parties at the infamous Berghain club should be classified in much the same way as classical music.

Believe it or not, this is not a trivial issue. The ruling will allow the Berlin nightclub to stay in a much lower tax bracket, allowing them to pay 7% culture tax instead of the typical 19% entertainment tax.

Those opposed to this ruling argued that a place where individuals come to dance, have fun and take drugs is "ruled by entertainment, not by culture." However, the club's management successfully argued that the same could be said for classical music. The court sided with Berghain.

This is not only a win for the nightlife culture, but also people who love electronic music. Rock 'n roll may never die, but techno is "high culture."
