Carbone

Description

Housed within the newly transformed Chancery Rosewood at 30 Grosvenor Square—the former US Embassy—Carbone London opened on September 17, 2025, as Major Food Group’s first European outpost. Founded in New York’s Greenwich Village in 2013 by chef Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick, the original redefined Italian-American dining by elevating mid-century classics with premium ingredients and theatrical service. That venue became a celebrity magnet and reservation impossibility, spawning locations in Las Vegas, Miami, Hong Kong, and beyond while preserving its core: hearty portions, nostalgic flair, and unpretentious indulgence. In London, Carbone adapts to Mayfair’s sophistication, incorporating British elements like Scottish langoustines and hand-dived scallops, plus a brand-first risotto, positioning it as a standout among upscale Italian restaurants for groups planning bachelor parties or milestone gatherings.

Designer Ken Fulk crafted the two-level space to blend 1950s New York supper-club swagger with Mayfair elegance. A ground-floor terrace and bar lead to a sweeping crimson staircase descending into the main basement dining room, featuring plush burgundy booths, checkerboard marble floors, velvet seating, and curated artworks by Vito Schnabel including pieces from Ai Weiwei and Julian Schnabel. Captains in custom tuxedos perform tableside rituals—mixing salads, deboning fish, flambéing desserts—while Sinatra-era tunes play softly. The layout supports intimate booths or larger tables, with energy building from daytime calm to evening buzz, ideal for extended dinners that segue into nearby lounges.

The menu mirrors the flagship with family-style sharing at its heart. Antipasti open with beef carpaccio or baked clams, followed by the tableside Caesar alla ZZ (around £25-30). Pastas dominate: Spicy Rigatoni Vodka (signature tubular noodles in fiery tomato-cream sauce) remains the cult favorite, joined by lobster ravioli or new risotto variations. Mains showcase Veal Parmesan (generous breaded cutlet with marinara and mozzarella), Dover sole piccata deboned tableside, or octopus pizzaiolo. Local touches include rosemary-scented scallops. Desserts feature lemon cheesecake or flambéed bananas Foster. Complimentary starters like bread and salami set the tone.

Expect £200-350 per person for a full progression with drinks, reflecting luxury sourcing and the premium Mayfair setting among London’s Italian restaurants. Cocktails start £18-22, with an extensive wine selection.
