Cocina de autor inside the city's botanical garden
In Situ has the single most unusual address in Medellin dining: it sits literally inside the Jardin Botanico, the city's botanical garden. Open since 2008 and run by the garden itself, it is an open-air room where tables spill toward the greenery and the water features, an oasis a few steps from the metro and a world away from the El Poblado bustle.
Chefs Johan Felipe Zapata and the Brazilian veteran Eliseu Marconi Sasso Righi cook a modern Colombian cocina de autor with a permaculture streak, leaning on local and Pacific-coast ingredients and an ethos that matches the garden around it.
Look for the five-cheese steak with risoni, mushrooms and asparagus; fettuccine with prawns, olives, capers and fried-garlic butter; and a nut-breaded fish with wild rice and a passion-fruit sauce. A recurring four-hands tasting brings in guest chefs for a bigger occasion.
It reads elegant but easy, and the garden setting makes it as good for a leisurely lunch as for a slow dinner. This is one of the city's few genuine garden-immersion rooms, so it is worth the short trip north for the setting alone.
In Situ books directly - reach the restaurant on WhatsApp or by phone through the link below, and note it keeps daytime-leaning hours with the garden.
