Astra has operated as a nightclub in Mykonos Town since 1987, when it opened in the Tria Pigadia quarter, by the Three Wells on Enoplon Dinameon Street, in the middle of Chora. Minas, the Mykonos jeweler and designer, drew up the space the year before, in 1986, and built its exterior to blend into the surrounding Mykonian architecture instead of standing apart from it.
The room was shaped entirely by Minas, from its architectural lines to its ceiling, which is the part guests remember: a hand-crafted replica of the northern hemisphere's night sky, built with more than 2,500 fiber-optic lights that pulse over the room in time with the music.
A large image of Apollo watches over the interior, a reference to nearby Delos, the mythological birthplace of the god and, in Greek myth, a source of light and music. Since it opened, Astra has hosted major touring artists and cultural figures, and it remains one of Mykonos Town's longest-running nightclubs.
