Sea Satin Market by Caprice holds one of the most photographed positions on Mykonos, directly below the row of windmills at the edge of Chora and Little Venice. Tables run down toward the rocks at sea level, between the windmills and the water, and the terrace looks west toward the sunset.
The story goes back to 1990, when Sea Satin began as a day market selling ceramics and foreign press before becoming a breakfast spot and then a restaurant, and pieces of the old market's art and ceramics are still part of the decor. The cooking is classic Greek and Cycladic: fish and seafood from the day's catch, dishes from the grill and the oven, and homemade plates built on local ingredients. The house loukoumades, a years-old recipe finished with honey syrup, are the dessert to leave room for.
What separates Sea Satin from a quiet seafood dinner is what happens after dark. As the sun sets the music comes up, and dancing and singing between the tables is a tradition that goes back to the early years, with entertainment every day of the summer. The atmosphere is celebratory and unmistakably Mykonian.
The setting carries the evening: western light across the water, the windmills standing over the terrace, and Little Venice glowing just around the point. It suits a long, late dinner that slides into the night.
