Barbara is a tiny tasting-menu counter tucked into Chinatown at 305 East Pender Street, and it holds a Michelin star in the current guide. It is one of the most personal fine-dining rooms in the city, built around a compact open kitchen where the chef works in full view of the room.
Chef Patrick Hennessy named the restaurant for his mother, whose neon signature glows on the wall and gives the space a warm, personal feel. He worked as a sous chef at Chambar, then at Kissa Tanto and at Eleven Madison Park in New York, before opening Barbara in June 2020.
The format is a three-course tasting menu with three options at each course, so guests choose their own path through the meal. The menu costs $120 per person and changes with what is best that week; the counter and the choose-your-own structure are what to plan around each visit.
Barbara serves Tuesday through Friday from 5:30pm to 10:00pm. Reservations open on a rolling basis about six weeks out and go quickly given how few tables there are, and a credit card is required to hold the booking. Book direct on OpenTable.
