Joe Fortes has been a Robson Street landmark since 1985, a seafood and chop house wrapped in dark mahogany paneling, polished brass and crisp white linens that feels neither forced nor dated.
The main dining room is anchored by a horseshoe oyster bar with large booths for lunch meetings or dinner, and a mezzanine looks down over live music in the room below. Upstairs, the rooftop patio is an urban garden with a living green wall, an outdoor fireplace and its own horseshoe bar, one of the best-known patios in downtown Vancouver for warmer nights.
The kitchen partners with Ocean Wise for sustainable seafood and keeps things straightforward: the Crab Cake ($30) is pan-fried with lemon-basil aioli and charred lemon; Joe's Seafood Tower on Ice ($165) stacks chilled lobster, local oysters, marinated clams and mussels, scallop ceviche, albacore tuna crudo and jumbo prawns; and the 20-ounce Bone-In Rib Steak ($102) comes with market vegetables and a choice of mashed potatoes or fries. Joe's Fresh Sheet brings in classically prepared fish and shellfish that changes daily.
The mahogany-walled private wine room is available for an intimate lunch or a corporate celebration. The room runs daily from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and casual attire is welcome.
