Fire-centered Nikkei in the Wake building, El Poblado
Oni Nikkei sits on the ground floor of the Wake building in El Poblado. Nikkei is the Japanese-Peruvian kitchen that grew out of a century of migration between the two cultures, and Oni runs it with fire at the center.
The menu moves across nigiri and makis, ceviches and tiraditos, and robata-grilled plates cooked over the ancestral Japanese ember technique, with the raw-seafood work and the fire cooking drawing the most attention. The restaurant describes itself as a temple of flavor, culture and design, and the plating leans as theatrical as the flavors.
The room leans into ritual, with dim, plant-filled lighting and courses framed as a sequence, not a menu to pick through, which sets a slower pace than the sushi counters nearby.
The room is dark and moody, built for a night out instead of a quick meal, so Oni turns up so often as a date-night and special-occasion pick. Service draws consistent praise, and the kitchen keeps an experimental, seasonal streak that rewards repeat visits.
