Etro sits on the roof of the Binn Hotel in El Poblado, and the room is the reason to come. A long bar runs the length of the space under a sculpted timber ceiling that curves overhead in stacked slatted bands, lit from within so the whole ceiling glows after dark. It is the most considered piece of interior design on any rooftop in the city, and it photographs exactly as well as it looks in person.
The plan is open on one side to a terrace that looks across El Poblado toward the hills, so the room works in two modes. Early evening it is a bar with a view, quiet enough for a conversation and set up for cocktails rather than bottles. Later, particularly Thursday through Saturday when it runs to 11:30pm, it fills and takes on the energy of the neighborhood below.
Service is bar-led. This is a cocktail room with food alongside rather than a restaurant that happens to have a roof, which sets it apart from most of the El Poblado rooftop set and makes it a better first stop than last one.
It opens at midday, which is unusual here and worth knowing. An afternoon on the terrace before the crowd arrives is the version of Etro most visitors never see, and it is the better one if the design is what brought you.
The hotel setting keeps it calmer than the Provenza rooftops a few blocks west. Come for the room and the view; go elsewhere if you want a party.
