Tropicana is the beach club on Paradise Beach, the strip on the south coast of Mykonos that has been the island's party beach since the 1980s. It is the original of the format, the bar-on-the-sand that turns into a dance floor, and most of what came after on Mykonos borrowed the template from here.
Days start out as a normal beach club: rows of sunbeds and umbrellas on the sand, a full bar, food service, and swimming off a wide, shallow beach. It is come-as-you-are rather than exclusive, with free entry and sunbeds charged separately, which keeps the crowd young, international and loose compared with the island's pricier clubs. The venue traded for years on that reputation, at one point landing on a Travel Channel list of the world's sexiest beach bars, and it still trades on the same open, unpretentious energy.
The switch flips in the afternoon. Around half past four the DJ takes over, an MC works the crowd, and people climb onto the sunbeds to dance as the sound system and lights push the beach into full party mode. It runs hard through the late afternoon and into the night, and the energy is the whole point.
Tropicana operates through the summer season and peaks in July and August, when the afternoon set is packed. Daybeds and tables are worth arranging in advance for peak dates, especially for larger groups.
