Citizen Public House sits in Old Town Scottsdale as one of Arizona's original cocktail-centric dining rooms. Chef Bernie Kantak opened the doors in 2011, and fifteen years on the place still runs on the same idea: serious food, spirited drinks, and hospitality that never tips into pretension. The room is warm tones, leather, wood, and vaulted ceilings, with a stainless-steel bar anchoring the energy. The Family Room and the Atrium take smaller groups, and Benjamin's Upstairs is a private speakeasy with its own bar.
Kantak is the draw. He has cooked at the James Beard House in New York, and he built his reputation on the Original Chopped Salad, a cult dish officially recognized as an Iconic Dish of the State of Arizona. It arrives with smoked salmon, Israeli couscous, arugula, asiago, black currants, pepitas, dried super sweet corn, and marinated tomatoes. Order it first.
From there the menu is comfort food with real technique behind it: coffee-rubbed short ribs with tart cherry barbecue sauce; amaro meatloaf under porcini mushroom cream and cabernet demi-glace; and pork belly pastrami with rye spaetzle and Brussels sprout sauerkraut. Bacon fat popcorn and Kilt Lifter fondue open the table, and the cocktail list, with barrel-aged recipes rested in American oak, is as considered as the food.
Come for a full dinner, land early for the daily Social Hour from four to six with $10 cocktails and bar bites, or take Benjamin's for a group.
