Chef Matt Carter's modern Italian with house-made pasta at Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive
Fat Ox is chef Matt Carter's modern Italian restaurant, set on the corner of Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive in the Marketplace. Carter, Phoenix-born, graduated from the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in 1989 and refined his skills in France. Here he builds modern riffs on regional Italian classics around fresh pasta, extruded and sheeted in house, and imported products and specialty meats.
The space sets the tone. A contemporary, luxurious Italian dining room opens to a full bar and a courtyard patio that comes alive in Scottsdale's temperate months, equal parts date-night destination and celebration room. The cooking leans on a local pecan wood-fired grill, with steaks up to a 40oz Linz Reserve porterhouse served for two to four.
Regulars build the meal around the pasta. The Garganelli with black truffle butter, speck and Parmesan and the Radiatori alla Buttera with cured pork sugo, broccolini, tomato, burrata and salsa verde are house classics, and the 25-layer lasagna and the burrata with charred tomato jam and pickled strawberry stay in the conversation. Italian-influenced cocktails, craft beers and a full wine list round out the evening.
Aperitivo Hour runs daily from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM in the bar and lounge, giving early arrivals a reason to linger. Behind sliding wooden Italian doors, the private dining room handles everything from intimate dinners to cocktail receptions.
