Gary's is a 36-seat neighborhood room in South Granville, at 1485 West 12th Avenue, that delivers serious cooking without the special-occasion price tag. Opened by chef Mathew Bishop and Bailey Hayward, it earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, the guide's nod to great quality at great value, and remains one of the hardest little tables in the city to land.
Built around an open kitchen, the room is exactly what its owners call it, "a nice place for nice people." The Michelin inspectors describe it as a convivial neighborhood spot, and the cooking is rustic and approachable, rooted in French-country technique. The kitchen works closely with local farms, letting the plates taste clean and direct.
Because the room is so small, mostly tables of five and under, reservations are essential and they move fast. If your date is gone, the notify list sends an automated email when a cancellation frees a table in your window. Walk-ins are welcome if you are willing to wait for a seat.
