Minami opened in Yaletown in June 2012 as Miku's sister restaurant, bringing the aburi flame-searing technique to Ocean Wise seafood and local ingredients on Mainland Street. The space flows from an open sushi bar through dining nooks to a lounge, with a summer patio. The Blue Wave private room seats 7-14 guests, and the restaurant can host a full buyout for up to 100.
Signature dishes anchor the menu. The Salmon Oshi arrives pressed with jalapeno and Miku's own sauce, the dish that put the aburi style on the map. The Iwate Wagyu Tsukune, seared A5 wagyu with a sous-vide egg yolk and karashi mayo, is another standout, alongside crudo and nigiri built around BC and Japanese seafood. The Taste of Minami tasting menu runs eight courses for 98 dollars, moving from oysters and sashimi through the wagyu tsukune, a surf-and-turf course, and a signature oshi trio before dessert. The Minami Martini, made with gin, lychee liqueur and sake, is the house cocktail.
Modern lantern lighting and clean wooden lines make for a chic, approachable room suited to lunches, dates, or groups. Dine-in runs daily from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with lunch from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM and take-out from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM. There is no strict dress code, though business casual attire fits best.
Peak demand falls around May to October, across cruise season and summer, plus NYE weekend. If the dining room is full, ask about bar seats or a tasting-menu slot, which often stay open after the primary book has closed.
