Chicago's original coal oven pizzeria, charred thin-crust pies from a 1,500-degree oven in West Town
Coalfire opened on Grand Avenue in 2007 as Chicago's original coal oven pizzeria, serving a thin-crust, coal-forged pizza that comes out slightly charred and bubbly. Owner Dave Bonomi built the room around a clean-burning coal oven that runs at 1,500 degrees, and that heat is the whole idea, blistering and puffing the crust at its edges.
The signature is the coal-fired Margherita, kept simple with sauce, mozzarella and basil so the char does the talking. From there, reach for the Pepperoni and Whipped Ricotta or the White Pizza with mozzarella, garlic, cream, basil and whipped ricotta. Pies run about 14 to 15 inches, and on a build-your-own the menu itself recommends just two or three toppings, so let the crust stay the point.
The room is at 1321 W Grand Ave in West Town, open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 PM to 10 PM, Friday and Saturday from noon to 10:30 PM, and Sunday from noon to 9 PM, closed Mondays. Pickup and delivery can be ordered online, though the best result comes straight off the coals at the table. A second Coalfire operates at 3707 N Southport Ave in Lakeview.
It is an easy West Town dinner or a casual night out, a short hop from downtown but firmly in the neighborhood. Come for the Margherita and add a pepperoni pie for the table.
