Deep dish since 1966 at the graffiti-walled Gino's East flagship just off the Magnificent Mile
Gino's East opened in 1966 when cab drivers Sam Levine and Fred Bartoli, with their friend George Loverde, set up a block off the Magnificent Mile. The deep dish that made it famous came from Alice Mae Redmond, the pizza chef they hired, who spent 29 years in the kitchen and developed the dough recipe the restaurant still uses. This original-site Mag Mile flagship carries that history forward.
Inside, three floors are covered in graffiti-tagged walls, casual and unmistakably Chicago, a short walk from many of the big downtown hotels. The Comedy Bar on the third floor has hosted stand-up since 2011 and still runs weekly shows, and a rooftop terrace looks out over the Magnificent Mile in spring, summer and fall.
The order is the deep dish. Gino's Supreme comes with sausage or pepperoni, onions, green peppers and mushrooms, the Meaty Legend stacks pepperoni, Italian sausage, Canadian bacon and bacon, and the O.M.G. keeps it vegetarian. A tavern-style thin crust covers the lighter order, gluten-free thin crust and vegan cheese are available on request, and the bar pours a 1966 Old Fashioned made with rye whiskey.
In Chicago, only this Magnificent Mile location accepts reservations, and the third floor and terrace can also be booked for private events.
