French-Vietnamese dining inspired by 1920s Saigon, on Oak Street in the Gold Coast
Le Colonial recreates the languid glamour of 1920s Saigon on Oak Street in Chicago's Gold Coast, where it has served French-Vietnamese cooking since 1996. A palm-filled dining room and an elegant bar and lounge set the tone, and the terrace, open all year, looks out over the Oak Street crowds.
Executive chef Amanda Barnes runs a kitchen of traditional Vietnamese recipes and contemporary takes on the classics, built for the table. Bo luc lac, the shaking beef of caramelized filet mignon, sits alongside com chien fried rice, cari tom with jumbo shrimp in green coconut curry, and bo sate filet mignon with yams and string beans. The menu's own signature is ca chien Saigon, a crispy red snapper.
The chilled shrimp rolls and a cocktail at the bar are the right way to open before you settle into the dining room for the longer meal. The pacing is unhurried by design, the kind of dinner where the setting does as much work as the plates. For a small celebration, the Monkey Parlour is a secluded private room for up to 12 guests, painted with a monkey hidden among banana trees.
Lunch runs from midday and dinner is served nightly, with later hours on Friday and Saturday, and the house asks for refined dinner attire. Steps from Rush Street, Le Colonial plays as a romantic dinner on its own or the calm first act before a bigger night in the neighborhood.
