Pizzeria Uno is where Chicago deep dish began. Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo opened it in 1943 on the Near North Side, with Rudy Malnati Sr. in the kitchen, and it is widely credited as the birthplace of the Chicago deep-dish style. This is the table for anyone chasing the origin story.
The original location still operates at 29 E Ohio St. When the crowds outgrew the room, sister restaurant Pizzeria Due opened one block north in 1955, in the lower level of a Victorian mansion. Uno itself is casual and steeped in the deep-dish history that started here, and the kitchen still works from handmade dough and 1940s recipes baked in cast-iron pans.
The order is the Numero Uno: extra cheese, fresh sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and green peppers in a deep-dish pan, the pie the house calls its first choice. The menu runs further, to The Chicagoan with Italian beef and spicy giardiniera, the Spinoccoli with spinach and broccoli, pastas, sandwiches, salads and gluten-sensitive pizzas.
The dining room is open daily from 11am to 11pm, and reservations are taken online. It makes an easy lunch or early dinner before a Chicago night gets going.
