Spacca Napoli is a Neapolitan pizzeria in Ravenswood, and its origin story is part of the appeal. Jonathan Goldsmith, a former social worker, became a pizzaiolo at 50 and opened the pizzeria on February 14, 2006, baking in a wood-burning oven built by artisans from Naples.
The room is a warm, family-run neighborhood pizzeria built around that oven, with the hand of artist Ginny Sykes, Goldsmith's partner, visible in the art throughout; her studio is upstairs. These are soft, quickly baked pies meant to be eaten fresh from the oven, at the table.
Order the Margherita first, the pie that defines the style, made with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, basil, and pecorino. From there, the Marinara DOP with piennolo tomatoes, oregano, and garlic, and the Bufalina with mozzarella di bufala are the natural next moves.
The pizzeria is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 AM to 9 PM, with a short afternoon break Tuesday through Thursday, and closed on Mondays. Reservations are for indoor dining and are held for ten minutes, so arrive on time; the patio is first come, first served, and walk-ins are always welcome.
