The Barraco family ran Chicago taverns before the first pie. Vito Barraco opened Vito's Tavern at 80th and Halsted in 1932, moved to 79th and Carpenter in 1939 and began serving Italian sandwiches, sausage, and beef, and in 1946 the family started making pizza. That story earned it a place in the Pizza Hall of Fame. The signature is the original Sicilian-style recipe: quality tomato sauce, carefully seasoned sausage, and a guarded dough recipe on the thin crust the house is famous for.
The room is an old-school neighborhood pizzeria with a full bar, pitchers of Old Style and PBR on draft, and classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, and Grasshopper. Order the sausage pizza on the thin crust, or keep it simple with the cheese pie, and add pizza bread for the table.
It is open seven days a week, from 11 AM Monday through Saturday and from noon on Sunday, with last orders 30 minutes before close, so do not roll in right at closing. The Chicago location is cash only, pizzas are for dine-in or pick-up, and it closes on Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
