Zarella Pizzeria & Taverna opened in River North in March 2025, in the former GT Fish & Oyster space at 531 N Wells St. Chef partners Chris Pandel and Lee Wolen built it as a neighborhood pizzeria, the result of years of friendly debate over the finer points of pizza.
The pizzas come two ways, tavern style or artisan, as a 14-inch pie built from toppings like Ezzo pepperoni, soppressata, and Smoking Goose mortadella. Specialty pies include a Spicy Vodka with pickled peppers, a Carbonara with smoked pancetta, pecorino, and egg, and a Margherita with fior di latte and basil.
Around the pies runs a taverna menu of plates to share, from marinated artichokes and Grandma's eggplant to crispy calamari and meatballs, plus large plates like chicken parm, radiatore alla vodka, and ricotta gnocchi. The restaurant spans two levels, with a main bar and a downstairs taverna that also hosts private events.
Dinner is served nightly from 4 PM, and lunch runs Friday through Sunday from 11 AM, with reservations taken for both. It works as an early dinner before a night out in River North, for two on a weeknight or a group on the weekend.
