Duck Duck Goat is Chef Stephanie Izard's take on Chinese-American cooking at 857 West Fulton Market, inspired by the Chinese American restaurants and recipes she has enjoyed throughout her life. The draw is the handwork: hand-pulled noodles, house-made dumplings, wontons and spring rolls, plus a walk-up Baobing Bar window around the corner turning out soft serve and shaved ice in season.
Each room tells its own story. One takes its cues from Chinese tea culture, another from the 1940s and 1950s, with bold colors, patterned wallpaper and large round tables fitted with Lazy Susans for family-style dining. The Tearoom even has a window into the wok kitchen, where guests can watch their meal being cooked.
Order the Dan Dan Slap Noodles first, hand-pulled with pork and peanut ragu. The Xi'an Goat Slap Noodles bring cumin-spiced goat shoulder, Sichuan peppercorn and finger hot chili, the Mapo Doufu delivers the numbing-spice payoff, and the Duck Fried Rice comes with Peking duck meat and a soft-boiled duck egg. Only a few whole Peking ducks are available each night, so call ahead to reserve one.
Dinner runs Sunday through Thursday from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM and Friday and Saturday until 11:00 PM, with dim sum brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Bring people who like to order too much and pass everything around.
