Best Rooftop Bars in Chicago (2026): The 12 Best Skyline, Date-Night, and Party Roofs
Our concierge shortlist of the 12 best rooftop bars in Chicago for 2026, grouped by vibe - skyline and river views, date-night lounges, and all-season party roofs - with a note on the winter season.
Chicago may be the most underrated rooftop city in America - a downtown of river bends, lakefront, and landmark towers that the best roofs frame better than any postcard. So the honest answer to "what are the best rooftop bars in Chicago" is not one bar but a short list sorted by the night you are having: the head-on skyline and river views, the polished date-night lounges, and the all-season party roofs. Below is our concierge shortlist for 2026 - twelve of the best rooftop bars in Chicago, grouped by vibe, each one a table our team helps guests reserve. Every pick links to its full page for the view, hours, dress code, and booking. The one thing to plan around is the weather: the fully open-air decks run seasonally, roughly May through October, and wind down for the Chicago winter, while the retractable-roof and enclosed rooms below stay open year-round. Aim for sunset over the river and you will not go wrong.
Best Rooftop Bars for Skyline Views
If the view is the whole point, these are the rooftops where the Chicago River, the Loop towers, and Lake Michigan line up dead ahead.
LH Rooftop
LH Rooftop sits atop the LondonHouse, a 1923 Beaux-Arts landmark at the bend of the Chicago River where Michigan Avenue meets Wacker Drive. Spread across the 21st and 22nd floors plus a domed cupola, it is one of downtown's most photogenic perches, looking straight down the river to the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower, and Marina City. The indoor lounge runs year-round while the open-air terrace is a warm-season favorite; time your table for sunset when the river lights come up. This is the iconic Chicago rooftop photograph - book the terrace ahead.
Cindy's Rooftop
Cindy's Rooftop crowns the 13th floor of the Chicago Athletic Association, a landmarked 1893 club-turned-hotel on Michigan Avenue. It is the city's original see-and-be-seen rooftop, a soaring pavilion under a barrel-vaulted glass roof that frames a straight-on panorama of Millennium Park, the Pritzker Pavilion, and Lake Michigan. The glass-enclosed terrace runs year-round, so the view carries from brunch through late night. Reserve a table by the windows and go at golden hour, when the park and the lake glow.
Aire Rooftop
Aire Rooftop crowns Hyatt Centric The Loop on the 24th floor, one of downtown's few genuinely high, fully open-air perches. There is no glass box here: the deck is exposed to the sky, delivering panoramic wraparound views of the Loop's skyscraper canyon, the Willis Tower, and glimpses of Lake Michigan. As a fully open-air deck it runs seasonally, spring into autumn, so save it for a clear warm evening and arrive before sundown for the light.
VU Rooftop
VU Rooftop is a 22-story rooftop restaurant and bar in the South Loop near McCormick Place, prized for a wide-angle view that sweeps from the Willis Tower and the downtown skyline out to Lake Michigan - a fresh vantage away from the crowded River North and Loop rooftops. The expansive space runs three bars, two open-air patios, and firepits. The indoor bar holds the view year-round while the patios open seasonally; come for a group sunset and the skyline lit up after dark.
Terrace 16
Terrace 16 occupies the 16th floor of Trump International Hotel and Tower in River North, a polished indoor-outdoor destination pitched at a well-heeled, special-occasion crowd. The draw is the vantage: floor-to-ceiling glass and an expansive open-air patio look straight onto the Chicago River, the Wrigley Building, and Tribune Tower. The glass-walled interior runs year-round while the patio opens in the warmer months. Reserve a patio table for a milestone dinner at dusk.
Best Rooftop Bars for Date Night
When the night is about two people and a skyline, these are the plush, polished rooms where the cocktails are the occasion.
NoMI Garden
NoMI Garden is the open-air rooftop terrace of NoMI, the acclaimed dining room on the 7th floor of the Park Hyatt Chicago, steps from the Water Tower on the Magnificent Mile. The garden is a lushly planted, umbrella-shaded oasis that looks across Michigan Avenue to the historic Water Tower and the Mag Mile skyline. As a seasonal garden it runs spring through autumn - one of the most romantic warm-weather tables in the city. Reserve for a golden-hour dinner among the greenery.
Z Bar
Z Bar is The Peninsula Chicago's rooftop lounge, a jet-set-inspired hideaway just off the Magnificent Mile in the Gold Coast. Set on the hotel's sixth-floor terrace, it blends a plush indoor lounge with a stylish open-air deck of low sofas and marble tables, framed by the 875 North Michigan tower and the surrounding skyline. The indoor lounge runs year-round while the deck opens seasonally. Polished, discreet, and cocktail-forward - a grown-up date; book the deck for warm evenings, the lounge for cool ones.
Miru
Miru is the modern Japanese restaurant and terrace on the 11th floor of the St. Regis Chicago, Jeanne Gang's rippling supertall in Lakeshore East. From its dining room and expansive open-air terraces it delivers one of the city's best water-facing panoramas, over the Chicago River, Navy Pier, DuSable Harbor, and Lake Michigan. The dining room runs year-round while the terraces open seasonally. Come for sushi and a cocktail at sunset over the water and reserve a terrace table ahead.
ROOF on theWit
ROOF on theWit is the 27th-floor rooftop lounge atop theWit in the Loop's Theatre District. Set high above State and Lake, it wraps an indoor lounge and an open-air terrace in sweeping skyline views, with a retractable roof that extends the season well beyond summer. Stylish and lively after dark; reserve a table and time it for the golden hour.
Best Rooftop Bars for a Party
When you want the roof loud and running whatever the season, these are the all-weather party roofs - retractable roofs and enclosed spaces that keep going through a Chicago winter.
I|O Godfrey
I|O Godfrey is the sprawling rooftop lounge atop The Godfrey Hotel in River North, and one of the few true year-round rooftops in Chicago thanks to a retractable glass roof. Roughly 15,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor space blends teak decking, white lounge sofas, firepits, and water features with open skyline views. It slides from a daytime lounge into a DJ-driven weekend party, rain, shine, or snow. Book a table for the group and let the roof do the rest.
The J. Parker
The J. Parker is the craft-cocktail and small-plates rooftop crowning Hotel Lincoln in Lincoln Park, a rare uptown perch looking out over Lincoln Park's greenery, Lake Michigan, and the downtown skyline to the south. The signature feature is a fully retractable glass roof that opens or closes in under 90 seconds, so the atrium terrace stays open year-round. A livelier, uptown alternative to the downtown roofs - reserve for sunset over the park.
Chateau Carbide
Chateau Carbide is the rooftop lounge and terrace atop Pendry Chicago, set 24 floors up inside the landmarked Carbide & Carbon Building on Michigan Avenue. Styled as a sun-drenched garden in the sky, it wraps a chic indoor lounge and an open-air terrace in skyline views across the East Loop, the Chicago River, and Lake Michigan. The indoor lounge runs year-round while the terrace opens seasonally. A design-forward room for a stylish night out; book the terrace for warm evenings.
