Dia de Muertos in Mexico City 2026: how the week actually works, and where to eat
Dia de Muertos falls on November 1 and 2, and in Mexico City the week around it is
the single hardest stretch of the year to book. Hotels in Roma, Condesa and Polanco fill
months ahead, and the restaurants that visitors have heard of fill with them.
The thing worth understanding first: this is not Halloween, and the city does not treat
it as one long party. It is a family observance with a public face. The parade is a
recent invention, the ofrendas are the real tradition, and the best version of the week
is one that respects the difference.
Here is how the days break down, and where to eat when everyone else is trying to.
The shape of the week
Late October is the build. Ofrendas go up in public buildings and restaurants,
cempasuchil marigolds appear on every corner, and the city starts to look the way the
photographs promise. This is the quietest and in many ways the best time to arrive.
The Desfile de Dia de Muertos, the big parade along Reforma, lands on a Saturday in
late October or the first of November. It draws enormous crowds and closes major roads.
Confirm the date before booking anything on Reforma that day.
November 1 is Dia de los Inocentes, for children who have died. November 2 is
the day for adults. Both are quieter and more domestic than the parade.
Mixquic and Xochimilco hold the most traditional observances, out in the southern
boroughs. Genuinely moving, genuinely far, and worth a full evening, not a quick stop.
Where to eat
Restaurant demand this week runs about double a normal early November, and the tables
that go first are the ones with a courtyard or a terrace.
Roma and Condesa
Contramar is the reservation everyone wants, and the week of Muertos it is
the hardest table in the country. Lunch runs long here by design, which makes it the
better booking than dinner.
Maximo Bistrot is the other one. Produce-led, market-driven, with a bar worth asking for a seat at. Rosetta sits in a Roma townhouse and is the
most atmospheric room on this list, which matters more than usual in a week built around
atmosphere.
Blanco Colima occupies a restored Porfirian mansion with a courtyard, and
during Muertos that courtyard usually carries an ofrenda worth seeing.
Polanco
Pujol needs no introduction and needs booking well before you read this.
Saks - Polanco and Tori Tori are the more gettable Polanco rooms,
and Tori Tori's architecture is worth the visit on its own.
Centro Historico, for the parade
If you are watching the desfile, eat where you already are. Balcon del Zocalo
looks directly onto the Zocalo, which during this week is the best seat in the city, and
El Mayor overlooks the Templo Mayor ruins. Both need booking a long way out
for parade day specifically.
La Terraza Gran Hotel is the other Zocalo-facing option and one of the most
photographed interiors in Mexico.
After dinner
The city goes out properly this week. Bar Oriente in Roma runs the latest, to about 5 am, and Kennedy Social Room in Polanco and Vanderbilt Polanco hold up too. Toledo Rooftop is the rooftop to
take a group to before any of them.
Why the week rewards planning more than budget
Most peak weeks in a city are solved by paying more. This one is not, and that is the
part visitors get wrong.
Contramar has no VIP tier. Pujol does not sell its way past a full book. The rooms that
define Mexico City dining are mid-sized, chef-owned and priced far below their equivalents
in New York or London, so the hard part is finding a seat, not affording one. A table in
the first week of November is won six weeks earlier, by someone who decided earlier.
The corollary is that the week is unusually good value once you are in. The exchange rate
does most of the work, and a tasting menu here costs a fraction of the same ambition
elsewhere. What it costs instead is forethought.
Planning notes
- Book six to eight weeks out minimum. This is the week Mexico City is fullest, and
it is not close.
- Confirm the parade date before you fix anything else. It moves, and it closes
Reforma.
- Give Mixquic or Xochimilco a whole evening or skip them. They do not work as a
stop between dinner and a bar.
- Sunday November 1 and Monday November 2 are quieter than the parade Saturday. If
you want the observance more than the spectacle, come for those.
Each restaurant's page has its booking link. For the nightclubs and rooftop bars in this guide, tell our Mexico City partner your dates and group size and they will arrange the table.
