Polanco's landmark Japanese garden restaurant
Tori Tori began in 1995 when Dr. Katsumi Kumoto Kawasaki opened a small Japanese room in Ciudad Satelite serving mostly chicken, which is what tori means. Three decades later it is a reference Japanese name in Mexico City, and the Temistocles house in Polanco is its landmark: a steel lattice facade by Michel Rojkind wrapped in vegetation, with interiors by Esrawe Studio and a terrace-garden that made the building famous when it opened.
The flagship reopened after a renovation that opened the terrace to the street, thickened the planting and installed chef Marcelo Hisaki at the pass. His menu is a freer, fresher reading of contemporary Japanese cooking that leans hard on Mexican fish.
Around it the house repertoire holds: rolls, sushi cakes, chirashi, shabu shabu and teppanyaki, served to a Polanco crowd that treats the place as a canteen. Sister rooms operate in Anatole France, Condesa, Altavista, Lomas de Chapultepec, Santa Fe and Satelite, each with its own character.
