Cactus-filled garden dining in a Condesa casona
Botanico is a greenhouse-style restaurant built inside a large casona on Alfonso Reyes in Condesa, arranged around a central garden of towering plants and oversized cacti. There is a pond with axolotls, and an open kitchen worked by about ten cooks, so the cooking is part of the scenery along with the greenery.
Chefs Alejandra Navarro and Ernesto Hernandez run a contemporary menu of small and mid-size plates built on local produce and a menu that changes with the season. Dishes have included shrimp aguachile with a serrano chile and pistachio salsa, kampachi tiradito with black garlic ponzu, and a heirloom tomato plate finished with smoked tomato juice and peach. The bar covers wine, craft beer and cocktails, including a tamarind-passionfruit mix and a sparkling lime drink the house calls the Botanico lemonade.
The restaurant is closed on Mondays and runs late the rest of the week, open until 1am Tuesday through Saturday and until 11pm on Sunday. Service is attentive and adapts its recommendations to whatever is changing on the menu that day. Garden seating is the section worth asking for when you book.
