Balcon del Zocalo is the terrace on top of the Zocalo Central hotel, and it faces the main square head on. From the rail you look across the full expanse of the Plaza de la Constitucion to the Metropolitan Cathedral on the left, the Palacio Nacional straight ahead, and the enormous national flag turning in the middle of it all. At night the cathedral facade is floodlit; during ceremonies and holidays the square itself becomes the show.
The room is a glass-edged balcony, not a party rooftop, with linen, warm lighting and a service style built for long dinners. Dress is smart without being strict, and the space works as well for a table of four as for a proper celebration. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all run, but the hour worth planning around is the one that catches both the daylight square and the lit cathedral.
The kitchen, under chef Pepe Salinas, does contemporary Mexican cuisine, combining current techniques with traditional ingredients from across Mexico's regions. There is an a la carte menu, a seasonal tasting menu called the Menu de Experiencias, and a wine and mezcal list.
