Corona Capital: the Mexico City weekend around the festival
Corona Capital is the largest international music festival in Mexico, it runs at the
Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in November, and the lineup skews toward the British and
American indie and alternative acts that do not otherwise tour Latin America.

half of November, across a Friday to Sunday, at the same circuit that hosts the Mexican
Grand Prix a few weeks earlier.
The festival is the reason to come. The city is the reason to stay a few extra days.
What the festival week does to the city
Corona Capital brings a specific crowd: mostly Mexican, heavily from CDMX itself, in their
twenties and thirties, and out every night of the weekend rather than only on show days.
That produces a pattern worth knowing. The festival runs afternoon into late evening, so
the dinner window is compressed and the nightlife window starts late even by Mexico City
standards, which already run late. Clubs in Roma and Juarez fill from one in the morning
on festival nights.
The other thing: the Autodromo is in Iztacalco, east of the centre, and everyone is
staying in Roma, Condesa, Juarez or Polanco. That is a real journey twice a day, and it
shapes what is worth booking on show days.
Show days: eat before, not after
The circuit food is festival food. Plan the meal for early afternoon and treat it as the
last proper thing you eat before the gates.
Contramar is the Roma Norte lunch that defines the
city, and it is a lunch restaurant rather than a dinner one, which makes it the right
answer for a show day. It fills from two in the afternoon.
Lardo in Condesa and
Maximo Bistrot in Roma are both walkable from
where you are likely staying and both do a real lunch service.
Blanco Colima is the Porfirian mansion in Roma
with a patio and an upstairs room, and it takes a group of eight without a fight, which is
the shape most festival trips travel in.
The non-show day, which is the whole point of staying
The reason Corona Capital is worth building a trip around is that Mexico City is one of
the best eating cities in the world and you have Thursday and Monday.
Pujol and
Quintonil are the two that sit on the world lists,
both in Polanco, and both need booking weeks rather than days ahead.
Rosetta in Roma Norte is the third, in a converted
mansion, and is the easiest of the three to describe and the hardest to get into on a
Saturday.
Em is Lucho Martinez's smaller, more experimental
room, and Nicos in Clavaria is the one that has been
quietly cooking classical Mexican since 1957.

Rooftops, before the night starts
Mexico City's rooftop scene is centred on the Centro Historico, looking at the cathedral
and the Zocalo, which is a very different view from the Reforma towers.
Balcon del Zocalo and
El Mayor both look straight at the Metropolitan
Cathedral. Terra Alta and
Circulo Mexicano are the same
sightline from different buildings.
Closer to where you are staying,
Supra Roma is the Roma Norte terrace that
runs latest, and Toledo looks over the
Reforma tower cluster.
Late, which in this city means late
Nothing meaningful happens before midnight and the good rooms fill after one.
Ragga Club by Joy is the big-room option and
the one most likely to carry a festival afterparty.
Bar Oriente has an upper level and private
karaoke rooms, which is a better format for a group of ten than a table on a dance floor.
Looloo Studio and
Vanderbilt are the Polanco end of the
scene, and Salon Camarena runs themed
productions that change week to week.

How to plan it
Book the non-show days first. Pujol, Quintonil and Rosetta are the reason to extend the
trip, and they are gone long before the festival weekend arrives.
Treat show days as lunch days. The gates and the journey east take the evening.
Do not book a table for midnight. In this city that is the start of the evening, not the
middle, and a table held from midnight is two hours of paying for an empty room.
