Nicos has been in Claveria, a quiet residential pocket of Azcapotzalco well north of the tourist circuit, since 1957, when Maria Elena Lugo Zermeno and Raymundo Vazquez opened it as a small neighborhood fonda. Their son Gerardo Vazquez Lugo trained as an architect, chose the kitchen instead, and now runs it. The restaurant is in the Michelin Guide selection and spent years on Latin America's 50 Best.
This is the reference point for classic Mexican home and country cooking done seriously. The signature is sopa seca de natas, a nineteenth century convent recipe of crepes layered with shredded chicken, raw milk cream, tomato and poblano that takes eight hours to build.
