There is no better seat over the Zocalo. La Terraza runs along the fifth floor of the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico, on the square's southwest corner, and the front row looks down on the whole thing: the enormous national flag turning in the middle of the plaza, the long red-stone front of the National Palace opposite, the twin towers of the Metropolitan Cathedral to the north and the roofline of the old city running out behind them.
The hotel itself is the draw before you ever reach the roof. Built as a department store and opened in 1899, it keeps its wrought-iron cage lifts, curling Art Nouveau balustrades and the vast 1908 stained-glass ceiling that floods the atrium with colored light. The terrace above is broad and formally set, with white linen, awnings and heaters, and it stays elegant, not clubby.
The kitchen works across traditional and contemporary Mexican, with an a la carte menu and a long-running weekend brunch. Service starts at breakfast and carries through to a late dinner.
