Uchi Scottsdale is the Arizona home of Uchi, the Japanese restaurant that James Beard Award winning chef Tyson Cole built in Austin, named for the little red house where he first served his non-traditional take on sushi. In Old Town Scottsdale, at Scottsdale Road and 1st Street, it trades sushi-bar convention for a playful, ingredient-driven style that treats fish with the precision of a tasting menu and the ease of a neighborhood favorite.
The room is a study in warm restraint: walnut tables, low pendant lighting, pleated banquettes and a ribbed wood ceiling that curves over a busy sushi counter. It feels intimate and modern at once, an interior designed to keep attention on the plates and the pours.
The menu moves through cool and hot tastings, sashimi and maki, tempura and yakimono, anchored by a seasonal omakase. Look for the machi cure of smoked yellowtail with Asian pear and marcona almond, the hama chili with ponzu and Thai chile, and the cult-favorite fried milk dessert. The sake and Japanese whisky lists run deep.
Nights draw a stylish, celebratory crowd, with a daily happy hour from 4 to 6pm. A weekend lunch runs Friday through Sunday from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and dinner runs Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11pm. Parties of 11 or more are handled separately by the restaurant.
