Tyson Cole's contemporary sushi and omakase room in Wynwood
Uchi, meaning home in Japanese, brings chef Tyson Cole's nontraditional approach to Japanese cooking to Wynwood, at 252 NW 25th Street in the arts district. Cole, a James Beard Award winner, opened the first Uchi in 2003 in a refurbished house in South Austin, and the Miami room pairs that precision with the energy of the neighborhood.
The Wynwood space was designed by Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, with metal, brick, and concrete softened by walnut and white oak, creamy textiles, and botanical wall coverings. Artist Vas Bets hand-wove rope through the towering block wall at the entrance. The menu is built for sharing across the table, moving between cool and hot tastings, sushi, and sashimi.
The menu is updated daily, so order around what is on it that night. The hama chili pairs yellowtail with Thai chili, ponzu, and orange, the akami crudo sets bigeye tuna against aji amarillo and blood orange, and the kinoko nabe brings seasonal mushrooms, koshihikari rice, and egg yolk. For the full arc, the kitchen offers a ten-course omakase, a curated somakase, and a six-course vegetarian tasting.
Lunch runs daily from noon to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 11pm, with happy hour from 5pm to 6:30pm. Uchi takes reservations and also welcomes walk-ins.
