MILA occupies a rooftop above Meridian Avenue, a step off Lincoln Road in South Beach, and it pairs a serious kitchen with a real sense of occasion. It works for a stylish night out without tipping into nightclub territory.
The concept is MediterrAsian, a marriage of Mediterranean warmth and Japanese precision. Designer Olya Volkova gave the rooftop a Cycladic look softened by Japanese wabi-sabi: reclaimed wood, unpolished floors, natural stone, handmade linen, lush greenery, and warm light, with sculpture and art in metal, clay, and wood throughout. Beyond the main dining room there is MILA Lounge for cocktails and late nights, and MILA Omakase, a 12-seat enclosed room with two seatings Tuesday through Saturday.
The kitchen, led by chef Michael Michaelidis with corporate chef Joshua Walls, sends out izakaya-style plates meant for the middle of the table: spicy tuna crispy rice, a grilled octopus skewer with romesco, 'shawarma' wagyu gyoza, robata-grilled specialties, and Japanese A5 wagyu striploin from Kagoshima, with some dishes finished tableside.
The crowd dresses up, with an elegant chic dress code at dinner, and the energy climbs through the night with Balearic music and fire performances on the rooftop. Arriving before sunset catches the rooftop as day turns to evening, and the restaurant asks guests to arrive 30 minutes before the reservation.
