Mandolin Aegean Bistro cooks the food of the Greek and Turkish coast inside a restored 1940s home on the edge of Miami's Design District. The Michelin Guide lists it with a Bib Gourmand, and the room is built for a long, unhurried lunch or a relaxed dinner that still feels like an occasion.
Anastasia Koutsioukis and Ahmet Erkaya opened Mandolin in December 2009 and turned the old house into a whitewashed space drawn from the coastal towns where the Greek islands meet the Turkish coast. Guests come in through blue gates and bougainvillea, and the heart of it is the outdoor courtyard: mature trees, orchids, and wood tables set under open sky, and that garden carries the whole mood.
The kitchen is meze-forward and seasonal. House-baked bread comes with the small plates, alongside baked feta with heirloom tomatoes, Greek oregano and sumac, and Greek and Turkish samplers of tzatziki, taramasalata, hummus, and eggplant. A whole Mediterranean sea bass grilled with olive oil, lemon, and oregano makes a fine centerpiece, and larger plates like manti dumplings and lamb chops over orzo round out the table. Vegetarians eat particularly well here.
The crowd is easygoing and in-the-know, pulled in as much by the setting as by the cooking. The kitchen serves from noon to 11pm every day, and valet parking sits two blocks south at 4141 NE 2nd Ave.
