Contemporary Japanese izakaya and robata grill on the Downtown Miami riverfront
Zuma occupies the riverfront edge of the Kimpton EPIC Hotel at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, a contemporary Japanese izakaya whose outdoor terrace looks straight out over the yachts passing on the Miami River. It is a polished, celebration-minded room for a weekday lunch, a weekend brunch, or dinner Downtown.
When it opened in 2010, this was the first United States location of chef Rainer Becker's izakaya concept. The room is built around a sushi counter and a robata grill, where fish, meat, and vegetables cook over open flame in full view, and the space runs from the main dining room to the bar, lounge, terrace, and private dining.
Order to the izakaya format and lean on the signatures. Rock shrimp tempura with citrus mayo is a dependable opener, and the black cod, marinated in saikyo miso and wrapped in hoba leaf, is the dish to build around. Both are meant to be shared across the table alongside sashimi and nigiri from the counter and plates off the robata grill, with more ordered as the night goes on.
Lunch runs Monday through Friday from noon to 3pm, and brunch runs Saturday from noon to 4pm and Sunday from 11:30am to 4pm. Dinner starts at 6pm nightly and runs until 11pm, or 11:30pm Thursday through Saturday, while the bar stays open until midnight most nights and 1am on Friday and Saturday.
