Zuma · Restaurant · London
Rainer Becker's Knightsbridge izakaya, the original since 2002.
Zuma opened in Knightsbridge in 2002 as London's introduction to informal izakaya dining, and two decades on Rainer Becker's flagship remains a cornerstone of the capital's Japanese scene, listed in the Michelin Guide and now the anchor of a global brand.
The room centers on an open kitchen with a visible sushi counter and robata grill, flanked by granite tables, warm wood finishes, and lighting that shifts from relaxed at lunch to buzzing by evening. Three distinct kitchens drive the menu: the sushi counter, the robata grill, and the main kitchen, with sharing as the organizing principle. Seating ranges from intimate booths to communal setups suited to groups, and a lively bar handles cocktails and sake.
Signature dishes rotate through the calendar: miso-marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf (53 pounds), sliced yellowtail with green chilli relish and ponzu, grilled Chilean sea bass with green chilli and ginger dressing, and wagyu sirloin tataki with truffle ponzu. The Ebisu lunch set is the efficient way in on weekdays.
Hours are Monday to Friday 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM, then dinner Monday to Saturday 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM and Sunday to 10:30 PM. An afternoon menu of drinks and light bites runs daily from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM between the two services.
