Tape opened in the autumn of 2015 at 17 Hanover Square in Mayfair, the address once home to the club Jalouse. It was built as a nightclub with its own recording studio, wired so artists could be recorded from anywhere in the club. Sister venues now carry the name in Mykonos and Lagos.
Three spaces share the building. The Main Room is the club, with a central stage and runway, LED screens, lasers and a full lighting rig. Little Tape, which opened as the members' lounge, is a smaller room with a speakeasy feel and its own bar, and Tape Studio, a working recording, mixing and mastering suite, shares its home with Little Tape.
Hip-hop leads the week. Tape is open Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11pm to 3:30am. Tuesday opens with R&B before Tape Tuesday turns to hip-hop after 12:30am, Friday is Mixtape Friday, Saturday is The Takeover with anthems from around the world, and Sunday mixes hip-hop with Afrobeats. After Friday and Saturday nights, the Little Tape after-party runs from 3am to 5:30am.
Tape is primarily a private members' club, but non-members can book a VIP table ahead of the night. Dress is stylish and elegant: no sportswear or designer tracksuits, denim shorts, flat open-toe shoes, sliders, everyday sneakers, sunglasses or man bags, though tailored smart shorts are fine. Every guest needs physical ID, and photos of ID are refused. Tell us the night and your group size, and our London partner will arrange the table.
