Chotto Matte Soho is the original UK site of a Nikkei brand that now runs in Toronto, San Francisco and beyond, its Frith Street flagship built for an evening that does not want to end after dinner. It is a buzzy, low-lit two-floor room with DJs, murals and a crowd that treats dinner as just the start of the night, a scene restaurant that still cooks seriously.
The restaurant spans two floors. The ground floor holds a cocktail bar, a raw bar and a la carte tables; upstairs is the main event, an open robata grill and an Itamae sushi counter feeding a large dining room. The design leans theatrical, with color-pop murals, warm neon, disco balls and stage lighting overhead. Lighting stays low and energy high, and by the later seatings it reads more supper-club than quiet dining room.
Under executive chef Jordan Sclare, the kitchen cooks Nikkei, the Japanese-Peruvian crossover of ceviche and robata alongside sushi and sashimi. The signature Sato Maki, sea bass and salmon tartare flamed tableside, is the order everyone photographs. Beyond it, look to the ceviche, Black Cod Aji Miso, tuna tataki, and the robata grill dishes off the open fire. Pisco is the house spirit, so a Pisco Sour is the natural opener.
The room runs Monday to Saturday from noon to 1:30 AM and Sunday from noon to midnight. Reservations run through the restaurant's own SevenRooms system. The lounge bar takes walk-ins, and groups of 15 or more are handled separately, by email, through the venue's events team.
