Frieze week inverts London's booking pattern - Tuesday and Wednesday are the peak, not the weekend. The Mayfair rooms that fill first, and the order to book them in.
Frieze London: where the art world actually eats
For one week in October, Regent's Park holds two tents and London holds the entire
international art trade. Frieze London covers the contemporary market, Frieze Masters
covers everything from antiquities to the late twentieth century, and Frieze Sculpture
runs free in the English Gardens for most of the month.
Confirm the 2026 dates at frieze.com before you book anything. The fair moves within
October and the satellite program moves with it.
What does not move is the pattern. The fairs are in the park, the galleries are in
Mayfair and St James's, and the dinners are booked out three weeks before anyone
publishes a schedule.
Why Frieze week is harder to book than it looks
Most London weeks have one demand peak: Friday and Saturday dinner. Frieze week does not
work that way.
The fairs run in the afternoon. The gallery openings run early evening. The dinners run
late and long, and they run on Tuesday and Wednesday as hard as they run on Saturday,
because the collectors flying in for the week are working a compressed schedule and go
home before the weekend.
That inverts the usual advice. A Tuesday table in Mayfair during Frieze week is harder to
land than a Saturday table in the same room in November. Groups of six and eight, which
are the standard shape of a gallery dinner, are the first thing to disappear.
The other thing worth knowing: a large share of the week's private dinners are bought out
entirely. Rooms you would normally walk into are closed to the public for a night. That is
invisible when you look at a booking platform, which will simply show no availability and
give you no reason.
Mayfair, which is the actual center of gravity
Regent's Park is where the tents are. Mayfair is where the week happens.
Scott's on Mount Street is the one to understand
first. It has been a Mayfair fixture since 1851, it sits a few doors from the Mount Street
gallery cluster, and during Frieze week the front room at lunch is effectively a trading
floor. Book it for lunch if you want to see that.
Mount St. Restaurant sits directly
above the Audley and is the more deliberate art choice: the walls carry a rotating hang,
and the room is designed for the kind of long lunch that turns into an afternoon.
Cecconi's Mayfair on Burlington Gardens is the
week's reliable default. It is a hundred meters from the Royal Academy, it serves all day,
and it will take a four-top at short notice more often than anywhere else on this list.
34 Mayfair on Grosvenor Square is the art deco grill with a live-music room, and it handles the eight-and-over gallery dinner better than most. Langan's Brasserie is the other
answer to that brief, and the more literal one: the walls are covered in the collection
Peter Langan assembled from artists who ate there, Hockney included.
The rooms that book out first
Sketch is the obvious Frieze-week booking and it
behaves accordingly. The pink Gallery room is one of the most photographed dining rooms in
Europe, the building holds five separate spaces at different price points, and the whole
thing is closer to an art commission than a restaurant. Book it four weeks out, not two.
Sexy Fish on Berkeley Square is the other room where the art is the point, with Damien Hirst's bronze mermaid sculptures at the bar and further artwork by Frank Gehry through the dining room. It runs loud and late, which makes it a better second stop than a first.
Gymkhana holds two Michelin stars on Albemarle
Street, three minutes from the Cork Street galleries, and is the hardest straight
reservation in this section of Mayfair during fair week.
Amazonico and
Novikov both run large, late and social, which is
what a gallery dinner turns into after the second hour. LPM
in Brooks Mews is the quieter, more precise version of the same idea.
Late, after the openings
Gallery openings end around nine. That is early, and it leaves a gap.
Tape off Hanover Square is the closest thing London has to an art-world late room, built around a recording-studio concept with table seating.
Maddox on Mill Street, a members club since 2007, is the
other late option on the same few streets.
For something with a view, Oblix at The Shard and Aqua Shard both run late on Level 32 and Level 31, which is a different way to end a night and an easier one to get eight people into.
How to plan the week
Three things decide whether Frieze week goes smoothly.
Book the weeknights first. Tuesday and Wednesday are the peak, not the weekend, and
everyone books in the wrong order.
Decide the group size before you decide the restaurant. Four is easy anywhere on this
list. Six is a real constraint. Eight and above narrows you to about five rooms in Mayfair,
and those five are the ones the galleries are also calling.
Leave the late stop unbooked until the day. Openings overrun, dinners overrun, and a table
held for midnight that you reach at one is worse than no table at all.
