Kissa Tanto is a one-Michelin-star restaurant that fuses Italian and Japanese cooking inside a room modeled on a 1960s Tokyo jazz kissa, the most distinctive dining space in Vancouver. The name carries the concept: kissa for the jazz cafes of 1960s Tokyo, tanto, Italian for so much. It is a full restaurant with a bar and a room built for lingering, which makes it as good for a group as for a date.
The roughly 80-seat room sits on the second floor at 263 East Pender in Chinatown, done in mid-century modern with curved banquettes, banker's lamps, maple, walnut and polished brass. It is co-owned by Tannis Ling with executive chef Joel Watanabe, whose half-Japanese, half-Corsican-Italian and Quebecois background is written straight into the menu.
