Kissa Tanto is a one-Michelin-star restaurant that fuses Italian and Japanese cooking inside a room modeled on a 1960s Tokyo jazz kissa. The name carries the concept: kissa for the jazz cafes of 1960s Tokyo, tanto, Italian for so much. It is co-owned by restaurateur Tannis Ling and executive chef Joel Watanabe.
The room is tucked into the upper story of a building on East Pender Street in Chinatown, built for lingering, which makes it work as well for a group as for a date.
The signature dish is a whole fried fish served with a grated daikon-soy dipping sauce. The tajarin, hand-cut pasta, comes with butter, roasted mushrooms and miso-cured egg yolk, one of several plates where Japanese and Italian technique share the same plate.
Reservations open 30 days in advance at midnight through Tock, and prime weekend tables go quickly, so book at the window once your date is fixed. Dress is smart and elegant in spirit, though the room is forgiving; a nice sweater and sneakers will not feel out of place.
