Angus An's Kitsilano Thai room where the family-style chef's menu is the smartest way to eat on West 4th.
Maenam is chef Angus An's modern Thai flagship on West 4th in Kitsilano, one of the most consistently praised kitchens in the city and part of the Michelin Guide's Vancouver selection. The room is warm and unpretentious, built for sharing rather than for show.
An is one of Canada's leading chef-restaurateurs. He is French-trained, a veteran of London's Michelin-starred Nahm, the first Thai restaurant to earn a star, and a cook who has traveled extensively in Thailand. He was named Vancouver Magazine's Chef of the Year in 2025, has cooked at the James Beard House, and wrote the cookbook that shares the restaurant's name.
His cooking balances intense, fresh Thai flavor with seasonal West Coast ingredients, moving from traditional family-style dishes to sharper riffs on Thai street food. The family-style chef's menu is, by most accounts, the more coherent way to eat here: it lets the kitchen set the pacing and sequence and reads the flavor logic of the food better than a scatter of a la carte plates. If you do order a la carte, build the table around the signature red or green curries and the crowd-pleasing Hat Yai fried chicken.
Special-occasion dishes like the whole crab and lobster claypot need at least 48 hours' notice, so plan ahead if you want them. Weeknights are the calmer window; Kitsilano gets busy on weekends and the room fills for prime-time seatings. Dress is casual to smart-casual, a neighborhood-forward room rather than a formal one.
