The Vancouver International Film Festival returns for its 45th edition, October 1 to 11, 2026. Eleven days, several hundred films, and a downtown core that fills with an industry crowd working to a schedule that does not respect normal dinner hours.
VIFF is a downtown festival. Venues cluster in the West End, Yaletown, and around Granville, which means the useful question is not where the best restaurant in Vancouver is, but which good restaurant you can reach in the forty minutes between a 5pm screening and a 7:30pm one.

What VIFF is, and who it draws
VIFF is one of the largest film festivals in North America by volume, and it has a distinct character: it is a public festival more than a market festival. Where Toronto runs on industry deal-making and Cannes on competition, VIFF programs heavily for audiences, with a long-standing focus on Canadian work, East Asian cinema, and documentary.
The practical consequence for a visitor is that the crowd is a mix of genuine cinephiles and the film industry, rather than press and buyers. Restaurants fill with people talking about the films rather than about distribution, and the whole festival is less closed than its bigger siblings.
Eating on a screening schedule
The festival's structural problem for a diner is that screenings run through the entire dinner window. Two approaches work:
Eat early, before the evening block. A 5pm table is easy to get in Vancouver and puts you in your seat by 7. This is what the industry actually does.
Eat late, after. Vancouver's kitchens close earlier than a comparable American city, which catches visitors out. If you are eating after a 9pm screening, you need a room that is genuinely open late, not one that stops seating at 9:30.
Downtown and the waterfront
Miku on the Coal Harbour waterfront is the most reliable pick of the festival: aburi sushi, a view across the inlet, and a location within reach of the downtown venues. It is also busy year-round, so book it first.
Blue Water Cafe in Yaletown is the seafood institution and the best raw bar in the city. Hawksworth in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia is the formal option and the one to book when the dinner has a purpose beyond eating.
Black & Blue on Alberni is the steakhouse, and Five Sails at Canada Place has the harbour view. CinCin on Robson is the Italian standby with a wood grill and a terrace, and it sits directly in the walking radius of most of the festival's downtown venues.
The neighborhood rooms
Worth the short ride out of the core for a night without a screening.
Ask for Luigi in Railtown is the city's favourite Italian and takes a limited number of reservations, so it needs planning. Savio Volpe in Fraserhood is the other one people name, and its wood-fire cooking is the draw.
Maenam on West 4th is the best Thai in the city by a distance. Nightingale downtown is the sharing-plates room that works well for a group with mismatched schedules, which during a festival is most groups.
Mott 32 in the Trump Tower building is the Hong Kong import and the most impressive room downtown for a dinner that needs to land.
After
Monarca is the supper club that runs latest and is the natural post-screening option, and Twelve West and Harbour are the two rooms that carry a proper late night in Vancouver.
Pierre's Champagne Lounge is the smaller, quieter alternative for a group that wants a last drink and a conversation rather than a room with a DJ in it.
Practical notes
- Book the 5pm slot. It is the single most useful reservation of the festival and almost nobody competes for it.
- October in Vancouver is wet. Plan for walking between venues in rain, and favour restaurants inside the walking radius over ones that need a car.
- Kitchens close early. Confirm last seating if you are eating after an evening screening.
- Weekends are the crowded part. The festival's first and last weekends carry the galas and the premieres; the midweek days in between are the calm ones.
