Okeya Kyujiro is the most theatrical of Vancouver's Michelin-starred sushi rooms, a one-star counter in Yaletown at 1038 Mainland Street where the roughly 25-course omakase is staged as much as it is served. It is a full evening's event, closer to a performance than a meal, and it rewards the guest who comes ready to sit back and be walked through it.
Chef Takuya Matsuda, who has worked in Japanese cuisine for more than 25 years, built the show around a style he calls Theatrical Omakase, drawing inspiration from Cirque du Soleil. The roughly 25-course dinner engages taste, sight, sound and emotion together, staged like a live performance. Matsuda travels to markets across Japan every few months to select the seasonal fish himself, and has visited more than 50 sake breweries to build the pairing list.
The room seats a small group at the counter, so the theater lands close-up. This is Cirque-inspired dining in the most literal sense: the plating, the lighting and the pacing are all part of the show. Dinner runs about 335 dollars before tax and gratuity, and there is also a lower-priced lunch omakase served midday Friday through Sunday.
Okeya Kyujiro serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday, with the lunch omakase added Friday through Sunday. Dress is smart casual: you are welcome to dress up, but it is not required. Reservations require a credit card on file, and cancellations inside 48 hours are charged a fee.
