Okeya Kyujiro · Restaurant · Vancouver
A one-Michelin-star, theatrical 25-course omakase in Yaletown - candlelit, curtain-raised, closer to a performance.
Okeya Kyujiro is the most theatrical of Vancouver's Michelin-starred sushi rooms, a one-star counter in Yaletown at 1038 Mainland Street where the roughly 25-course omakase is staged as much as it is served. It is a full evening's event rather than just dinner, closer to a performance than a meal, and it rewards the guest who comes ready to sit back and be walked through it.
Chef-owner Takuya Matsuda designed the experience around ceremony. Hosts in traditional dress lead you into a dark room lit by votive candles, and a black curtain is raised at the exact minute of your seating. Over roughly 25 seasonal courses, most of the fish flown in from Japan, the meal moves through set pieces: a crab chawanmushi, a shatteringly crisp lobster tempura, pressed mackerel nigiri and a grilled unagi sk
