Coco Pazzo has served the seasonal cooking of Tuscany at 300 West Hubbard in River North since 1992. Business diners, longtime regulars and families marking a special occasion keep returning to the same room, set inside a loft building more than 100 years old.
The room has an antique bar, timber beams, brick walls and cypress floors, warmed by blue velvet drapes that close off space for larger parties and make the room feel snug in winter. In summer the restaurant opens outdoors for alfresco dining, or simply a glass of wine in the sun.
Chef Eric Hammond's menu moves between classic and contemporary Tuscan-inspired dishes. Pastas include tagliatelle bolognese with Tuscan meat ragu, pappardelle with braised veal ragu and squid ink chitarra with PEI mussels and guanciale. From the wood fire come roasted octopus with saffron aioli, a whole branzino, and the Fiorentina, a 40-ounce porterhouse for two sliced tableside. The all-Italian wine list, led by Wine Director Tamra Presley Weiss, pours more than 20 wines by the glass.
Dinner is served Monday through Thursday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Friday and Saturday from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and the restaurant is closed on Sunday. For private events, the drapes partition space for up to 50 guests. After more than thirty years it has settled into being exactly what it is, and that steadiness is the appeal.
