Wood-fired Italian steakhouse with Nonna Formento's family recipes on Randolph Street in the West Loop
Formento's is an Italian steakhouse in the West Loop that blends Chicago's steakhouse heritage with the flavors of Italy. It opened on Randolph Street in 2015 as a tribute to Nonna Formento, and Executive Chef David Schwartz backs her family recipes with a serious kitchen and an even more serious wine and reserve-spirits program.
Steaks and chops come off a wood-fired hearth: a 45-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye, a bone-in filet and a bistecca alla Fiorentina sized for the table, finished with butters like 'nduja or black truffle. The raw bar runs from oysters and chilled shrimp cocktail to a grand seafood tower built for three or four.
The Italian side of the menu keeps the family recipes front and center. Nonna Formento's canestri arrives in Sunday Gravy with fennel sausage, meatball and ricotta, the chicken parmesan comes with pomodoro and mozzarella, and the veal Milanese is a 14oz chop under arugula and Grana Padano. Bucatini cacio e pepe and paccheri in vodka sauce round out a menu made for ordering across the table.
Dinner starts at 4:30pm every night, running to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and 10pm on Friday and Saturday, with happy hour in the bar, lounge and patio until 6pm. The wine list and reserve-spirits list reward anyone who wants to settle in, work through the list, and stay past the second course.
