Moe's Cantina River North · Restaurant · Chicago

A long-running River North cantina under a ceiling of papel picado.
Moe's Cantina has held its corner of Kinzie Street for years, and the room is instantly recognisable: strings of papel picado run the length of the ceiling in bright colour, the bar is backed by a deep display of tequila and mezcal, and the seating runs from booths through to long tables built for groups.
The kitchen is Mexican and generous rather than precious, covering tacos, shareable plates and a brunch service at the weekend. The bar programme leans heavily on agave, and margaritas are the house measure.
It works particularly well for groups. Large parties are accommodated by arrangement rather than through the standard online booking, and the room is used to handling celebrations without the service falling apart.
Later in the week the venue changes character - after ten on Friday and Saturday it runs as a late-night room with DJs and bottle service, listed separately on MyRSVP. For dinner and brunch, reservations are taken through the venue's own booking system.
