The Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel earns its reputation every morning at 7am, when the green leather banquettes fill with agents, studio heads, and the occasional film legend who has been coming here for decades. The hotel opened in 1912, three years before Beverly Hills was incorporated as a city, and the Polo Lounge followed in 1941, named when hotel manager Hernando Courtright tucked a polo trophy belonging to millionaire Charles Wrightsman behind the bar.
The setting is unmistakable. Martinique banana-leaf wallpaper, designed in 1942, wraps the room in the tropical-Hollywood green that spawned a thousand imitations.
