Bajel is the signature restaurant of the Sofitel Mexico City Reforma, thirteen floors above Paseo de la Reforma and named for a sailing vessel. It was the hotel's bid for guide recognition and it worked: Bajel was picked up in the first edition of the MICHELIN Guide Mexico and has stayed in the selection since, without yet holding a star.
The kitchen belongs to chef Alonso Vidal, who began cooking in Buenos Aires in 2007, moved to Mexico in 2012 and rose to head chef at the Michelin-starred Sud 777 before taking this room. His cooking is Mexican at the root with a global vocabulary, anchored in seasonal produce and named local growers. The format is a five-course tasting menu that has run spring soup, white mole, striped bass and short rib in green pipian with fresh corn.
The dining room is deliberately restrained, dark tones and bronze against sober furniture, with an open pass so guests can watch the brigade work. Windows frame the Angel de la Independencia and the Reforma skyline, and the Cityzen rooftop bar upstairs makes an obvious aperitif or nightcap. Zona Rosa and Juarez are blocks away.
Bajel takes bookings through OpenTable via the hotel's own restaurant page, and dinner runs Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm to 11pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Dietary adjustments should be flagged when booking, and hotel guests can arrange the table through the concierge.
