Blanco Castelar · Restaurant · Mexico City
Dinner inside a 1940 Polanco mansion
Blanco Castelar occupies Casa Domit, a Californian style mansion built between 1939 and 1940 by the architect Shafick Kaim, a block from Parque Lincoln. Grupo Carolo opened the restaurant there in June 2017 and left the bones alone: the wall hung staircase, the Solomonic columns, the iron chandeliers and the New Hispanic ornamentation are all original, with a contemporary layer added by Estudio 240. The garden and the terrace are the reason most people come.
The cooking is broadly Mediterranean and international with Mexican accents. There is a raw bar of oysters, caviar, hamachi and shaved Punta Mita octopus, a sharing section that runs from Iberico ham and smoked burrata to birria and confit suckling pig tacos, and a pasta and rice list with duck confit ravioli and langoustine risotto.
